FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D Printing

Material (filament) is heated and deposited onto a build platform in a layer-by-layer process to form the complete object.

Most common, versatile printing method. Wide variety of materials from cheap to expensive. Small to very large objects.

Document

    Some key characteristics:

  • Wide variety of thermoplastics and properties to choose from:
    • 1.Materials such as PLA, PETG, TPU, Nylon,

      Polycarbonate...etc

    • 2.PLA/PETG special varieties for silk/metallic/marble

looks, glow in the dark, wood.

    • 3.TPU’s for flexible elastic objects. Foam/spongy filaments

      possible.

    • 4.Food grade PLA is possible.
  • Tends to be more economical (PLA/PETG)
  • Larger prints possible
  • Good for producing in bulk and rapid prototyping.
  • Printing specifications:

  • Layer resolution (Z): 0.1-1 mm
  • Surface resolution (XY extruded plastic): 0.24-2mm
  • XY position resolution: 0.01 mm (movement of print head)
  • Maximum Dimension: 400 x 400 x400 mm (WxLxH)
  • Temperatures: 190C-300C

FDM Multi-Material 3D Printing

Material (filament) is heated and deposited onto a build platform in a layer-by-layer process to form the complete object.

Versatile printing method. Wide variety of materials can be combined for complex products.

Document

    Some key points:

  • Wide variety of thermoplastics and properties to choose from:
    • 1.Materials such as PLA, PETG, TPU, Nylon,

      Polycarbonate...etc

    • 2.PLA/PETG special varieties for silk/metallic/marble

    • 3.TPU’s for flexible elastic objects. Foam/spongy filaments

      possible.

  • Tends to be more economical (PLA/PETG)
  • Larger prints possible
  • Single print with multiple colors
  • Single print with multiple materials (Ex. TPU rubber around hard

    PLA wheel)

  • Complex structures possible due to dissolvable/specialized

    support material.

  • Printing specifications:

  • Layer resolution (Z): 0.1-1 mm
  • Surface resolution (XY extruded plastic): 0.24-2mm
  • XY position resolution: 0.01 mm (movement of print head)

FDM Multi-Color 3D Printing

Material (filament) is heated and deposited onto a build platform in a layer-by-layer process to form the complete object.

Versatile economical printing method. Wide variety of mixing color capabilities. Up to 16 different colors and/or materials.

Document

    Some key points:

  • Wide variety of PLA and PETG options
    • 1.Wide variety of colors. (Silks, transparent,

      semi-transparent,..etc)

  • Tends to be more economical (PLA/PETG)
  • Larger prints possible
  • Prints with multiple separate colors possible
  • Gradients and color changing effects possible
  • Printing specifications:

  • Layer resolution (Z): 0.1-0.48 mm
  • Surface resolution (XY extruded plastic): 0.24-2mm
  • XY position resolution: 0.01 mm (movement of print head)
  • Maximum Dimension: 320 x 320 x380 mm (WxLxH)
  • Temperatures: 190C-250C

SLA (Stereolithography Apparatus) Resin 3D Printing

Powerful UV is selectively flashed onto photosensitive resin. Exposed resin cures (hardens) one layer at a time to produce a 3D object. Post processing wash and further curing is applied.

Very high quality and resolution. Moderate to expensive material cost. Small to medium sized objects.

Document

    Some key points:

  • Good variety of resin colors including transparent
  • Excellent resolution for small and medium sized objects
  • Smooth surface due to high resolution
  • Printing specifications:

  • Layer resolution (Z): 0.1-1 mm
  • XY resolution (XY extruded plastic): 0.05 mm (3840 x 2400)
  • Maximum Dimension: 192x120x200 mm (WxLxH)
